Gum arabic as a natural ingredient
What is gum arabic, also called acacia gum or Arabic gum?
Gum arabic is a food additive. It is the resinous sap of the acacia trees (lat. Vachellia nilotica), which are widespread in Africa. In foods, acacia gum is used as a thickener, stabilizer and filler. The additive is obtained in a similar way to maple syrup. The bark of the acacia trees is scored in a V-shape and the emerging plant sap is collected in a bucket. Then the sap is cleaned until it reaches food grade, dried and pulverized into white acacia powder or large blocks. Arabic gum is an all-rounder and promotes beneficial microflora without showing any side effects. It is a prebiotic fiber as it is able to selectively increase the levels of lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria. As an indigestible carbohydrate, gum arabic is therefore characterized by a low glycemic index (GI), helping in the primary prevention of diseases associated with obesity.
What products are made from gum arabic?
Acacia gum prevents the formation of crystals and thus stabilizes food. This is particularly appreciated in sweets, such as gummy bears, in which sugar crystals should not form. Frozen products with arabic gum also form fewer ice crystals, which have a detrimental effect on the product texture. Arabic gum is also found in alcoholic beverages. In beer, for example, it stabilizes the foam so that it lasts longer. Wine stabilized with this thickener has a better mouthfeel. It also prevents tartar from precipitating. Other typical food applications include snacks, baked goods, dairy desserts, puddings, imitation milk, breakfast cereals, and fats and oils. In addition, gum arabic is also used for gumming paper, and as a pigment binder in the manufacture of paints and surface protection.
Pastilles have a high content of gum arabic as a natural source of fiber
A standard gum arabic product usually contains more than 30% dietary fiber, so the claim "high in fiber" is acceptable. Dietary fiber helps maintain a healthy immune system, normal blood lipid levels and a healthy cardiovascular system, and normal blood glucose levels. They result in a low glycemic response and help balance insulin/glucose levels in the blood.
Gum arabic pastilles in combination with other herbal ingredients
Gum arabic pastilles are excellent for combining with other herbal ingredients to improve health and increase well-being. For example, in combination with fig extract and lemon balm for better digestion. Together with propolis, sage, Iceland moss and vitamin C, they are beneficial for coughs and hoarseness and strengthen the immune system. With eucalyptus oil, gum arabic pastilles provide a clear voice and fresh breath. Enriched with valuable vitamins K2, B1 and C, they ensure normal functioning of the heart. With minerals such as calcium and magnesium, they provide essential nutrients to bones and muscles. A variety of active ingredients, vitamins or minerals can be combined with acacia gum. At the same time, pastilles supplemented with valuable fruit juice concentrates also have an excellent taste.
Gum arabic pastilles as a perfect dosage form
Dietary supplements and pharmaceutical products in pastille form are excellent because they dissolve slowly in the mouth and therefore the active ingredients are absorbed slowly through the oral mucosa. The effect of the ingredients occurs more quickly than with dosage forms that have to be swallowed, such as capsules. Compared to fruit gummi bears, the gum arabic pastille is additionally rich in dietary fiber. As a prebiotic fiber, it is able to selectively increase the levels of lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria. Extracted from acacia trees, Gum Arabic is an all-rounder and additionally promotes beneficial microflora without showing any side effects.
